What do comics
do if not dazzle our minds with the extraordinary displays of what a
hand, a pencil, and a vision can truly accomplish. Art is expression; so
a comic is essentially art with the continuous flowing stream known as a
storyline. If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much more so is
its value if those words come together to capture and expand your full
imagination?
When one
thinks of comic art, one will probably think of the big names in the
comic book industry. But comic art can be just about anything, from
simple things such as stick figures, doodles, or even character sprites
taken from your favorite video game. It is all a form of expression that
one person has chosen to share with all those around them. Many people
will say that comics are a lower form of art, or not art at all. The
truth is, comics are the epitome of their very own genre of art. Not
only does the art astonish us with the different styles of shading, a
vast multitude of colors, and its ability to bring to life our favorite
characters, it also invokes our deepest and innermost emotions. Each
style of art is just as unique of the personality of the people. Whether
you are a creator of such art because you enjoy expressing what you
believe and your interpretation of the world around you, or you merely
enjoy viewing the unique art of others, there is no doubt that you can
appreciate the importance and necessity of such a skill in this world.
Although there are many ways to formulate your own interpretations of
the subject, the same conclusions will be drawn by multiple audiences.
One thing is
for sure. Those who do not believe that comics are art, clearly have the
wrong interpretation of what art really is. It is true, of course, that
each is entitled to their own opinion. After all, what makes art so
beautifully unique is the fact that it is open to each person’s own
interpretation. However, it is my belief that comics are a form of art
that tells a story through the aid of words. By working together, the
unity of the two can accomplish things neither could hope to apart. Art
and literature are both mediums. Though it is a physical entity you view
from the outside, they can illustrate the deepest areas of ones soul,
which lies within. Truly, comic art is no less than any other form of
art. On the contrary, comic art sketches are made for storytelling.
Although not the only form of art capable of this, I can say with firm
conviction that comic art is the best art form for telling tales. So the
next time you create or even just see a brilliant masterpiece, just
imagine, if that picture could speak would it be any less art? After
all, that is all comics are: Art with a voice.
